When it comes to Maharashtra politics, there is none as lucky as the current Chief Minister - Vilasrao Deshmukh. And this at a time when Maharashtra is looming on the verge of doom. The state is facing a severe power crunch. From being a power surplus state to one begging other states to meet even its bare minimum power requirements, Maharashtra now is one of the prime candidates to make it to the list of Riches-To-Rags story. Scores of debt-ridden farmers have killed themselves and the count is still going on. Once India's favourite investment destination, Maharashtra is now struggling hard, and at times in vain, to prevent the existing industries from shutting shop and relocating to greener pastures. I am no expert on budgets and fiscal deficits, but from the looks of it, even that seems to be very murky at the moment. Despite all these handicaps, there seems to be absolutely no pressure on the incumbent Chief Minister to quit. The Opposition does not seem to have any kind of desire to become the Ruling Government someday. What more does the Opposition require to fire salvos at the Ruling government and force it to step down? Governments else where in the country fall for reasons less significant than these. The Opposition at the state and Centre are from the same group of parties, but still seem very different in their outlook. While the Opposition at the Centre tries to pull down the government for even the most trivial of issues, the state Opposition is quite content just sitting in the Opposition. The most probable reason for this seems to be that Opposition in the state lacks leaders. And until that time, Mr. Deshmukh can continue enjoying his luck.
